Karyn Detmer

Biography

My name is Karyn Detmer, and I am the MICUP Coordinator for the Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI). I was born in Indianapolis but spent my formative years in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I attended Grand Rapids Community College for two years and transferred to Grand Valley State University. There, I attained a Bachelors of Science in Behavioral Science. I then went on to study Nonprofit Leadership at Grand Valley State University and will receive a master’s in Public Administration in August 2013. My work experience consists of serving as a medical coordinator for underserved populations in Grand Rapids, Michigan—a position that enabled me to help empower refugees resettling in Michigan from around the world.

I married my best friend in September of 2012 and then we quickly moved to the U.P. My husband accepted a position at Michigan Tech in October 2012. We are outdoor enthusiasts and enjoy all the wonderful activities the Keweenaw Peninsula has to offer. We also thoroughly enjoy exploring with our beloved Jack Russell Terrier, Wilson, who keeps us on our toes at all times. Like many, we love traveling. Some of our favorite trips were to Puerto Rico, Australia, Ireland, and British Columbia. My husband and I drove our van 13,000 miles to Alaska and back, left a piece of our hearts there and plan on returning for our five-year anniversary. I dabble in crafts of all kinds, and while I am not always delighted by the end result, I have a blast using arts and music as a creative outlet.

As a member of the CDI team, I enjoy working in such a friendly and culturally competent center for students and staff alike. I look forward to coordinating my first MICUP program this May and hope to continue with its impressive achievements and awards.
