Subject: Vaccination

Mon, 23 Sep 2002

From: F.
When my son got his meningitis vaccination before his freshman year, we were told that it is only good for three years. So this past summer he went in to get another one. The nurse at the health department was surprised he was getting a second one. But he's still in college! And I didn't want to worry.

So be sure they get that second shot in three years.

My son received his meningitis vaccination last year before he started his freshman year and the health department told him it was good for 5 years.

I guess we should all do some checking on this. My son rec'd his before going off to college. I made him have a complete physical, bloodwork and all. He's pretty healthy, but you never know.

The thing I know about meningitis and vaccine, is that people are more susceptible to it, living in densely populated, dormitory type, communal type living situations (and in the service). Once they are off campus, the risk supposedly drops. One has to weigh the risks of the shot verses prevention, and so forth

My son never got a meningitis vaccination. Is it required? He lives off campus. Thanks.

Even though my older son lives off campus, I decided he
should still be vaccinated. He might be off campus, but he
comes in contact every day with people who live on campus.
I figured that as long as he was in a situation where he
could be likely to come in contact with someone who might
have meningitis, then I wanted him to be safe. It's not
much money for the peace of mind.

I also had my son vaccinated in his Freshman year. The vaccination was 63.00, had to ordered ahead and is only good for a week or so, so I coordinated the time to when he would be home. I had it done thrrough our medical doctor and they told me insurance does not pay for it nor is it available at a reduced rate. They did, however, give it for no charge. I am glad for the peace of mind. Also, they told me it is a once-in--lifetime vaccination.

hope it helps a little

My son was given the vaccination at MSU a few years ago when there were a
few cases at MSU. He was told it would only last for 3-5 years or long
enough for him to graduate this December. My daughter is now a freshman at
MTU and received the vaccination at our doctor's office. We have an HMO
(Health Alliance Plan) and they paid for it. She was also told it would be
good for 3-5 years.

We were told it was good for three years in 1999. When that son went in to the
health department this summer for another one (he's a senior this year), they
said it was good that he was getting a second one. It cost $70.
