Subject: Charter Bus Service to Downstate Locations and Back

Tue, 9 Sept 2003

Hi My name is S.S.,

Our son is a Sophmore this year and does not have a car or want one. (to much trouble). He takes the bus which is a charter bus home at Thanksgiving and Spring break. My husband went up and brought him home at X-mas because they won't let them bring a computer on the bus which we understand. It was between $120.oo and $140.oo which is less then it cost to go get him. They bring to Flint which is a hour from our house not 8 1/2 hour one way. We don't worry as much about young people who don't know how to drive in that kind of snow. He can sleep most of the way and is not zonk out for two day sleeping. We either call and reserve his ticket or he gets it as soon as they go on sale. It's worth it. Hope this helps.

I agree with you ****, some parents need to let their adult offspring learn to find solutions for their dilemmas. Of course MTU is far away, of course there is a lot of snow in winter. Sometimes the bridge is closed or the weather is bad and one has to get a room for the night. What did they expect?? But there are plenty of options for students to get home, or to campus, they just have to look for them. If I'm not mistaken, there is even a shuttle you can call to get you from the freshman lot to the campus in the winter.

What charter bus are you talking about? My son will be going to Tech next
fall without a car. Are you talking about the Greyhound bus?

Yes Dennis this is great to know, but I was talking about the Charter bus that comes down state at Thanksgiving, X-mas and spring break. It picks up at the MUB. It's great.

Where do the Kids find out about the charter bus. I remember seeing a flyer during our visit to MTU last Feb. and thought that was a good idea. We already told our some that this was going to be an option for him for Spring Break, because we had a hard time getting back during our visit in Feb. We're from the Flint area and this is a great option. Let me know, so that I can advise my son on where to look for this opprotunity.

From the Student Handbook:
<http://www.mtu.edu/studenthandbook/studentlife.html#5>
Undergraduate Student Government Bus Service Traditionally, the USG charters a bus to and from downstate Michigan locations (at the end of fall semester, Thanksgiving break, Christmas break, and sometimes for Spring break). Call (906) 487-2406 well in advance of your planned trip to determine if bus service will be available.
