(if you recommend that he travel through Wisconsin back to Detroit, during the winter months, let me know that as well) [Originally part of cell phone discussion]

As for the best route in the winter from the Detroit area (where we are from) take the bridge to US 2 thru Escanaba where it becomes 2 41 thru to Iron Mountain to US 141/2 to US 141 north to a little jog on 141/28 to US 41 to Houghton This route does not go thru the snowbelt of Marquette and Munising and even though it is a little longer there is usually less snow. Last year our daughter took it and had almost no snow until about an hour south of Houghton while the north route had accidents and even a student from Northern was killed on the north route because of the lake effect snow. So, it really saved them time in the long run. Of course it helps to watch the weather for the UP just before they leave or check on the internet. Last winter several other students took this route and found it to be better in case of lake effect snow. I think I got the route correct, but check a map to verify it.

THANK YOU for that advice!!! I already feel better about the winter trips down state. Actually, I'm sort of discouraging them...the kids aren't nervous--just fearless.

I second that suggestion on avoiding Marquette and Munising during any winter trip. I'm not sure about the route specifically suggested, but on the way back from Tech two winters ago, we went south on 41 at Marquette instead of staying on 28. You actually may have no choice as 28 is often completely closed during heavy snow period.

My son generally flies with a friend. Although it can be expensive, it takes half the time of driving and I feel much better knowing that he's not on icy roads. Has anyone ever taken 95 to 2 back from Tech? That would avoid back tracking on 141.

I used to live in the Calumet area until recently, and M95 is probably a worse choice as it is not a higher priority road US 41 is normally Ok. I have driven to Ohio many times using 41 to US 2 and over to I-75. Also, by taking US 41, there are less desolate stretches of highway than with M95. There have been many times where I-75 is in worse shape than the UP highways. Personally, I would stick with the US highways versus the state highways. By taking US 41 to US2 (around Escanaba, I believe) it would avoid the dreaded Covington Junction stretch of highway (US141) which at times has more snow and worse road conditions than just staying on US 41 (I used to drive to the Chicago area during the winter months too.)Personally, I would stick with the US 41/US 2 route and would encourage my child to do the same.
