Subject:
Care Packages
Wed, 30 Apr 2003
From: C.D.
Last semester I sent a care package from a local group to my son, a Jr.
It cost about 20.00. I tried to get info on the Habitat one and they run
30. and 50.00!!!!! I love him but, this is a little pricey. Is anyone
doing the other kind?
Thanks

I make my own care packages for my daughter. I put in extras of the stuff
I
know she really likes, and don't bother with the stuff I know she won't
eat.
I have also included gift certificates to local fast food joints, or money
designated for special purchases (pizza at the Library or smoothies from
the
MUB). I also include things like Silly Putty, a paddle-ball, and balsa
wood
airplanes -- little things to give the brain a break.
Have fun with it!

Now, that seems like one of the best ideas yet: a personal care package.
Much better than trading one kind of institutional food for another. And,
with a little creativity, we were surprised at what could be packed for
shipping. It turns out that our kids (oops, students :) didn't even mind
a
"birthday cake kit" when it consisted of a couple of home baked
layers of
cake (wrapped carefully), and a couple of containers of home made frosting
to be spread liberally on the cake in the assembly process. Candles
optional. We never did figure out how to ship the ice cream, though...

For ice cream, call Schwan's (1-888-724-9267) and arrange for a
delivery! I did this for my daughter at NMU last year, and will continue
as she moves to Tech. Every 2 weeks they deliver what I order (via
computer), and it's charged to my credit card. (I set it up for no add-ons
at the scene. Gave my daughter a booklet, and she e-mails current
wished-for items - but never really knows what she will get.)
Don't know if they will do this on a one-shot, and may not help those
whose
students are in a res hall.
Oh -this MUST be set-up via phone. Don't forget to call and stop delivery
as your student moves out - just in case.
