Celebrating our Independence

Portage Lift Bridge

With July 4th coming up this weekend I felt it would be a great idea to highlight the numerous events that are celebrated by the communities of the Keweenaw Peninsula. There’s so much to see and do, many parades, and lots of great fireworks!

Many of the community celebrations include parades, children’s games, barbeques, and lots of entertainment for everyone to enjoy. It doesn’t matter which town you visit, from South Range to Copper Harbor there will be lots of events to fuel a great time this weekend.

Fireworks are slated to take place in Lake Linden, South Range, and Copper Harbor. The Lake Linden fireworks are shot off on Friday July 3, and there is an opportunity to view them from the Keweenaw Star. The fireworks cruise will leave from Houghton and will include a full bar and gourmet hors d’oeuvres during the four hour trip. Its deemed the best seat in the house for fireworks.  If anyone is interested more information and reservations can be found be visiting the Keweenaw Excursions website or by calling them at 906-482-0884. In my opinion and from what I’ve heard from others, the best fireworks in the Upper Peninsula are those shot off in Copper Harbor!  There is a great overlook from Brockway Mountain Drive that allows you to look over the small town and view the magnificent fireworks over Lake Superior.  So many people go up to Copper Harbor to enjoy the spectacle that I highly encourage checking them out.  Its truly a wonderful site, especially if you get up there early and enjoy everything that the town has to offer during the 4th of July celebrations.

In the town of Hancock, there will be a Horse Trail scramble run and fitness walk also taking place on the 4th. This event begins at 1 p.m. by the Churning Rapids Trail. This challenge is a 10k trail run or others can enjoy it leisurely by doing the 5k fitness walk. Anyone who attends is encouraged to stick around for the music and entertainment as well as bringing a dish to pass so that everyone can enjoy the day’s festivities.  For more information, check out the Horse Trail scramble website

Ah, Independence Day! It’s a very special part of who we are as Americans.  I hope that wherever you may be this fourth that you are enjoying it with friends and family and having fun. If there are any questions or comments about this article feel free to email me at my personal email address . Any suggestions for future articles are welcomed. Looking ahead, I’ll be talking about different student organizations in the next couple of weeks as well as begin articles about prepping for the return to school. It is hard to believe that the summer is already half over.

Until next week,
