PastyFest 2009

PastyFest 2009

For anyone who has ever been to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, you know that no trip is complete without eating at least one pasty.  This delectable meat pie is an important part to the history of the UP, especially for miners.  To honor this food the people of the Keweenaw gather every year in Calumet to celebrate.  This year’s PastyFest falls on June 26-27, 2009.

To start the weekend, an awards ceremony for community service will take place at the Keweenaw Heritage Center located in St. Anne’s Church. The Pasty Parade travels through downtown Calumet on Saturday, starting at 11:00 a.m. Many other events include free horse-drawn wagon tours, vendors, artists and crafters, food and refreshments. Not only will there be tons of pasties, but also live music, a pasty bakeoff, kids games, and rounding the event off with a Richie Havens concert in the Calumet Theatre at 7:30 p.m. More information and registration forms can be found on the PastyFest website. The schedule of events lists times for all the aforementioned events, and short videos of PastyFest in years past can be viewed online as well. This event is just another of many festivals that make the Keweenaw Peninsula a great place to be during the summer months.

Baja SAE

Early this week it was announced that Michigan Tech students as members of the university’s Blizzard Baja Enterprise recently finished their three-part Baja SAE design competition and scored more points than any other competitor.  The team was awarded with the Mike Schmidt Memorial Iron Team Award, given to the team who has the most combined points after all three N. American Baja SAE events have taken place.  Overall this year, they took 8th place in Alabama, 2nd place in Oregon and 6th place in Wisconsin (competing against 99 teams).  This is the first time that Michigan Tech has received the Iron Team Award since 1981 when the university entered this competition.  To read more about this award check out the article entitled “Michigan Tech Takes Iron Team Award in 2009 Baja SAE”.  To find out more information about the Baja SAE team, check out the Blizzard Baja Enterprise website and SAE – Baja website
