Newest Michigan Tech Alum
I did it! I’ve officially graduated from Michigan Tech with my Bachelors degree in Geology. Even though I have graduated, I’m going to be writing a few more articles for ParentNet until my successor takes over! I hope none of you mind.
Graduation was amazing and I was so grateful to have family and friends in the audience to celebrate my success. It was pretty awesome to have the Michigan Tech Huskies Pep Band make an appearance too, of course. They added a nice touch to the ceremonies and brought their normal enthusiasm and excitement as they played the fight song and other tunes. I was also excited to have several friends sitting around and beside me and cheered for them as they crossed the stage to receive their diploma folders. Overall it was one of the best days of my life and I know there are more to come. Since this isn’t quite my good-bye article yet, I’ll hold off on the majority of my thank-yous until then. My experiences at Michigan Tech prepared me to face whatever might come my way and now that I’m out in the real world, I’m searching for the right fit. I know that the right job is out there, and I’m keeping my hopes up while I search.
All right, enough about me. It’s summer at Michigan Tech and this week was the start of Track A classes. I spent my previous two summers at Michigan Tech, one summer taking courses and the other working. In my opinion the summer is the best time to experience Michigan Tech and the Upper Peninsula/Keweenaw Peninsula. There is so much to explore and do near and around campus that students are rarely bored during the summer months, even though the student population is down quite a bit compared to the normal school year.
Events such as Bridgefest 2009, Fourth of July fireworks in Copper Harbor (some of the best fireworks in the Upper Peninsula), Strawberry Festival, and many other summer events keep both the students who stayed and the local community busy throughout the summer. The Chamber of Commerce also does a wonderful job on highlight some of the local attractions. One simply needs to get out and enjoy all there is to do, and another great resource to help with this is the Outdoor Adventures Program located right on campus. Students and community members can rent out gear to enjoy the great outdoors while they stay in the Keweenaw for the summer.
As I reflect back on all my wonderful summer memories, I hope that all those who stayed in Houghton for this summer will have the same great experience. If there are any questions or comments about this article, feel free to email me at my personal email address. Any suggestions for future articles are still welcomed. I’m looking forward to writing more articles for the summer!
