March 18–24, 2009, Number 533

Michigan Tech Athletics
With March Madness starting soon, I thought it would be appropriate to do an article highlighting the Michigan Tech Huskies' Athletic teams and their achievements thus far in the school year. Lots of important things have been taking place over the last couple of days to make this a really exciting time of year for our athletic teams.
Women's Basketball
On March 14, 2009 the women's basketball team, traveling to Northern Kentucky University's (NKU) Bank of Kentucky Center, had a major upset against the No. 1 ranked Northern Kentucky! The final score was 76-53 with Katie Zimmerman scoring 20 points and Lisa Staehlin bringing in 19 points (career high) to help with this victory. This is the first time the women's basketball team has advanced to the Sweet 16 since 1999 and they're making the Elite 8 their next goal. A full article describing the win can be found at the Michigan Tech athletic page. Michigan Tech played again on Monday, March 16, 2009 for the Regional Championship at NKU’s Bank of Kentucky Center. With great pride and enthusiasm, I can say they beat the No. 7 Indianapolis 69-52 and are the Midwest Regional Champions! The Women are now headed for San Antonio, Texas for the Elite 8. Their next game will be the Quarterfinals against Minnesota State on March 24, at noon. An online article from the athletics website describes more about their incredible victory.
Men's Hockey
The final game of the regular home season for hockey took place the weekend spring break began (March 6-7) with Michigan Tech hosting Minnesota. They split the series with an exciting overtime victory, 6-5, on Friday night and an upsetting loss, 2-0, on Saturday. The Huskies then headed to the WCHA Playoffs where they faced the No. 6 North Dakota on March 13, 2009. It was a disappointing loss, 5-1, for our Huskies team, but it was still a good year overall. Nine of our players were named to the WCHA Academic Team and we also tied for the WCHA record for the most ties in one season with a total of seven ties. For more information about the hockey teams season and highlights, check out the ice hockey website.
Nordic Skiing
On March 12 in Rumford, Maine the 2009 NCAA Skiing Championships began where 6 skiers from Michigan Tech, a school record, went to compete in the tournament. Overall the Michigan Tech students did very well in the competition, with junior Jesse Lang earning All-American Honors for his 8th place finish during the championships on March 14, 2009.
I encourage that if you'd like to know more about how our different Husky athletic teams are doing to check out the main athletics home page where you'll see up-to-date scores, schedules, and news on all of our teams. I'm so very proud of all our athletics and only wish that I could highlight everyone within this article. Overall, we've had a great season for sports and I know it will continue up until the end of the year. Congratulations for all the accomplishments and achievements that our students have earned this year. You make all of us Huskies very proud!
