Finding Off—Campus Living

Last week’s article was all about recontracting so that students can continue to live on campus in one of the three residence halls.  This week I’ll describe the ways to find off-campus living areas.  The ease of searching for off-campus listings is made possible by the Undergraduate Student Government’s (USG) off-campus housing directory

Through this list students have the opportunity to search for housing using specific criteria.  The website displays listings for various property types, date of availability, location, rent per person, and number of bedrooms.  This allows students to find an apartment or house that fits their budget.

In addition to the above criteria, there are also options for special conditions.  This includes whether the apartment or house includes laundry, pets, parking, plowing, utilities, and more.  This way students can know whether or not the listings include these options.

In the past three years, I’ve used this search engine as a method for finding the places that I’ve lived in and it’s been very successful.  When searching for listings information about the place’s location and the renter’s contact information. It will also include information about price and a brief description included by the owner.

Another option for finding local places to live, I did a basic Google ® search for Houghton, MI + Housing Rentals and was able to find different apartment websites.  A total of ten listings popped up for this search.  So, there are lots of options for students to choose from.

If there are any questions or comments about this article feel free to email me at my personal email address.  As always any suggestions for future articles are welcomed.

Until next week,

Katie
