Student at the career fair

Winter Career Fair

This week is the Winter Career Fair, where companies come up to Michigan Tech to search for potential job applicants. Whether it is a full-time position, a co-op, or an internship, students can speak with many different companies to find what they are looking for. There are just under 130 companies signed up for this career fair, looking for students from all the different degree programs here at Michigan Tech.

The Career Center has spent a lot of time helping students get ready for this event.  Many of the scheduled programs that the career fair put on this semester have been to help students check over their resumes, update them and make improvements, as well as help them with their interview skills.  A full list of events can be found on the career fair’s calendar site

Student Development Complex’s multi-purpose room is where the career fair was held this semester.  One big piece of news that made students really excited was the hours of the fair: 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.  This change was a result of the students’ request.  The hours were slated to be later in the day, because it fits better with class schedules and allow more students to make it up to the fair. A full list of the companies that attended can be found on the registered companies website.

To help students be prepared for the career fair, the Dress for Success Shop in the Campus Bookstore had special deals going on all last week into this week.  This allowed students to shop for tailored suits to help them look their best.  The deals included suits, shirts, ties, and shoes.

For those who said they were interested in hearing about the parent gatherings that took place, I'm happy to report that they were a success. I received word from a parent who was in charge of this past weekends gathering and he stated that it was nice to have parents of students get together to share stories. The overall consensus was that this should continue in the future and encourage more to come. It gives me great pride to see that the parents are enjoyed there weekend and can encourage each other as their students are away at college.

Extending the best of luck to all students who’ll be searching for a job at the career fair.  If there are any questions or comments about this article feel free to contact me at my personal email address.  As always, any suggestions about future articles are welcomed.
