Winter Carnival Closes with a Bang

Winter Carnival has once again come to an end and I’d like to share details of the events leading up to the final days of the week.  It was an absolutely gorgeous weekend; the sun was shining and temperatures were in the low to mid-thirties.  The weather made for a great time for families and visitors to check out the statues all over campus and in the local community.

The queen of Winter Carnival turned out to be Melissa Meyer who was crowned on Saturday January 31, 2009.  Samantha Hendricks and Laurilee Kroll took second and third respectively.  The queens helped out with other events during Winter Carnival and also participated in a special half-time show during the hockey game.  A full list of the events can be found on the Blue Key queen’s website

Great applause and appreciation must be given to all the students who worked so hard on the month-long and all-nighter statues.  All the fraternities, sororities, and other student organizations put forth amazing effort and made campus an out-of-this-world experience.  The Blue Key website and the Winter Carnival website have a list of the winning organizations for the statues. The winner’s for the fraternity month-long were: Phi Kappa Tau – first place; Delta Sigma Phi – second place; Tau Kappa Epsilon – third place.  Month Long Women’s Group winner’s were: Alpha Sigma Tau – first place; Delta Phi Epsilon – second place; and Delta Zeta – third place.

The weekend was filled with lots of entertainment. There were the hockey games against Colorado College, a comedy show featuring Gabriel Iglesias, the Torch Light parade with fireworks on Mont Ripley, and to close out the celebration, the awards ceremony and Snowball Dance.  Overall it was a great Winter Carnival and as it is my last (as an Undergraduate) I enjoyed it thoroughly.

In terms of next weekend, lots of families and visitors will make the drive up to Houghton’s campus to see the statues and to be entertained by the comedic hypnotist, Dale K. Also, the men’s and women’s tennis teams will be competing against Lake Superior State in the Michigan Tech Invitational, Saturday, February 14.  There will be lots to see and do while visiting Michigan Tech.

Overall, the next couple of weeks until spring break will probably fly by!  Keep in mind to remind your students that the Spring Career Fair is coming up on February 17, 2009 so it is important to continue preparation.  If there are any questions or comments about this article feel free to email me at my personal email address.  Any suggestions for future articles are welcomed.

Until next week,
