Events for Spring Semester
This past fall semester flew by for me and it was a lot of fun. I know that this Spring semester will be just as fun. There are a lot of things that are already scheduled for this semester such as Winter Carnival, Spring Career Fair, many Rozsa Events, Standathon, and more! Let me share some more information about these events with you.
Taking place this week is LeaderShape Institute, an intensive leadership development experience. Starting Monday and running until Friday, those involved will be learning and teaching with the majority of the work being done in a larger group called a Learning Community and then this large group breaks down into smaller groups called Family Clusters where work is done to create vision statements. At the LeaderShape Institute participants will create what is known as the LeaderShape Breakthrough Blueprint that they can use to help their organizations and their institutions that they are involved in outside of the institute. For more information about this event, go to the LeaderShape Institute website.
Of course as many of you probably know, classes will resume on January 12, 2009 where students will be returning to the hustle and bustle of everyday classes and work. There will be a slight break on Martin Luther King Day, January 19, 2009, with classes resuming again the next day. The next break won’t be until February 4 for Winter Carnival, but more about that in a bit.
Student Activities Comedy Series (SACS) is the organization on campus that brings in different comedy acts throughout the semester for students to enjoy for free. This group started in 2007 to provide late night social events on campus. All of the comedians perform on Friday nights at 10pm in the Memorial Union Ballroom. So far there are 4 scheduled events already planned: Jasper Redd on Jan. 23, Luis Ramey on Feb. 20, Kelly Taylor on March 27, and Sheng Wang on April 3. Check SACS website for more info on the comedy acts coming in for this semester.
Winter Carnival’s theme for this year is A Frigid Place Gets A Blast From Space running from February 4 to 7. Each year the theme turns campus into a winter wonderland with unique ideas and creativity from students in different organizations. Blue Key is in charge of this event and on the Blue Key homepage there is more information about the history of Winter Carnival where you can watch a video about past Winter Carnival events. More information surrounding Winter Carnival can be found on the Winter Carnival website.
A very important date for many students to know is February 17, 2009 which is the date of this Spring Semester’s Career Fair. The Career Center works hard to prepare all the students for interview skills, resume builders, and so much more. All the events can be seen on the Career Center’s Calendar page.
So, I’ve mentioned lots of entertainment that will be taking place this semester, but there’s so much more! The Rosza Center has a great line-up this year. The schedule has plays, music, and more planned for this semester. Individuals and groups such as: hypnotist Dale K ,the play Oliver!, The African Children’s Choir “Journey of Hope”, the musical Footloose and more. The Schedule of Rozsa Events will give more information and dates.
There are other events taking place this semester that I’ll be going into more detail about throughout the following weeks. These events include Preview Weekend, Spring Break, Standathon, Pride Week, Spring Fling, Finals Week, and Spring Commencement. All of these events can be found on the Michigan Tech Calendar. I know this is going to be a great year and a fantastic semester. If there are any questions or comments about this article feel free to email me at my personal email address. As always any suggestions for future articles are welcomed.
