Career Fair Coming Up
To begin this article, I’d like to share a little bit of my experience with this year’s Winter Carnival events. The All-Nighter on Wednesday night was amazing. We couldn’t have asked for nicer conditions. It may have been a little bit chilly temperature-wise, but other than that the atmosphere was exciting, music was blasting and everyone was enjoying the campus fun. Thursday and Friday were days to relax and go out to campus to see the finished projects. Again, the weather was incredible with the sun shining down upon our winter wonderland of “Frightful Creatures with Chilling Features,” allowing everyone to see the spectacular statues. This year’s statues were absolutely incredible and my favorite part was the diversity of the statues. There were so many unique and different ones that gave the campus a variety of artistic beauty. Some of my favorites were Delta Sigma Phi with their “Nightmares Consume a Child’s Room,” Alpha Gamma Delta with Dr. Frankenstein’s lab, and First Year Experience’s (FYE) “Icy Attraction for Hungry Kracken”, just to name a few. However, there were many more that were incredible as well that aren’t listed here. For more information about how statues placed, the overall winners of events and Winter Carnival, and pictures from this year, please visit Michigan Tech’s Winter Carnival website. I’d like to say congratulations to everyone out there for the great job on this year’s statues and for making Winter Carnival awesome. I hope that everyone who came up enjoyed their time here and are going to come back next year.
Now that the carnival weekend is over it’s time to get back to the real world of classes, homework, and exams. For this week’s article I’m going to focus on discussing the upcoming Winter Career Fair that will be held on February 19, 2008 at the Student Development Complex (SDC). The Career Center here at Michigan Tech works hard to put on the two career fairs every year, one in the fall and one in the spring. Please see the Career Center website for more information on the Career Center and the things they offer.
Every student has the opportunity to get prepared for this event. The Career Center that we have here at Michigan Tech has special events designed to aid the students in learning good interview skills and getting resumes prepared. They work hard to bring companies up to Michigan Tech. This week the Career Center is putting on a Mock Interview Week set up to give students the chance to learn about their strengths and weaknesses when going to interviews and how to improve those areas.
The Dress For Success Shop located in the University Campus Bookstore opened up earlier this fall for students to have the proper attire available to them when going to the career fair and interviewing with different companies. Having the right look is a big help in impressing the company interviewers when they meet you. The Dress For Success Shop is a great benefit for students to use and I highly encourage them to at least check it out. The manager of the Campus Bookstore, Mr. Mark Johnson, is there to assist you in any way needed, so please go see him.
Finally, once the student has sought out these avenues for getting prepared, the last thing is to actually go to the Career Fair. The Career Fair takes place throughout different locations within the Student Development Complex, where companies set up tables of information and await the arrival of the Michigan Tech Students. Many of these companies offer internships, co-ops, and full time jobs. The fair lasts from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb.19 and the students should try to head up there for at least part of the day to try to talk to the people there representing the different companies. For a chance to see which companies are already registered to attend this spring’s Career Fair, check out this webpage. More companies register everyday and this site allows students to search by major and job opportunities.
Another big part of the Career Fair that has been developed over the last couple of years has been e-Recruiting. This is a software program developed by the aid of the Career Center to help students and employers manage their resumes, job positions, and scheduling on-campus interviewing in a better format. I encourage you to check out more information about what e-Recruiting is through the Career Center’s e-Recruiting webpage.
For any questions, comments, article ideas, etc, please contact me at my personal email address and I’ll be happy to receive any emails that come my way. I hope all your students and anyone who came to visit Michigan Tech this past week had a great time and made it home safely. I wish all your students the best of luck as they get prepared and hopefully attend this semester’s Career Fair.
