An Introduction

Hello and a Happy New Year to you all! My name is Katie Schon and I'd like to introduce myself as the new writer for ParentNet. Before I go into information about who I am, I'd first like to take a moment and thank Jeremy, the previous writer, for introducing me to this great opportunity and to let him know that he will be missed. He did a wonderful job writing the articles each week and I hope that I may do as good of a job as he did.

As this is the first article that I'm formally writing I'd like to introduce a little bit about who I am and my experiences at Michigan Tech so far. Currently, I'm in my third year as a Geology major and I love it! I've also had a great interest in Archaeology and am hoping that after graduating in the Spring of 2009 that I can pursue a Masters degree in the Anthropology or Archaeology field. I'm a true Yooper through and through as I was born and raised in the small town of Ishpeming, Michigan. I really enjoy the great outdoors of the Upper Peninsula and that is why I chose to stay here. After three years of school I can honestly say that Michigan Tech has been one of the greatest experiences of my life and here are some of the reasons why.

Besides attending my classes, I've also been active in several groups on campus and have been trying to be involved in the local community as well. When I started attending Michigan Tech back in the Fall of 2005 I met my two roommates and we hit it off great. Together, the three of us became very much involved in Campus Crusade for Christ, just one of many Campus Ministries. I sing in the praise band as well as take part in other aspects of the group. Overall, it has helped develop me into a good individual and I've enjoyed making friends with this group.

Being a Geology major made it an easy choice to join Geo-Club. I try to take part when my schedule will allow it. Most of the activities include excursions to local areas of Geology interest, opportunities to go to conventions, and other things we "rockhounds" like to do. Last year I had the great opportunity to go the World's Largest Rock and Mineral Show in Tucson, AZ with two other students and had a fun time as well as learning a lot. It was interesting talking to the people there and seeing remarkable mineral specimens. I've known since I was ten that I wanted to be a geologist, and the more I learn about rocks and minerals the more I love it! Rocks have always been a passion of mine and since the Upper Peninsula has a fascinating geologic history, it makes studying at Michigan Tech worth it.

Along with these groups, I also take part in broomball. I've played for my hall team Daddy's Girls–Blue my first year and last year had the privilege of playing with friends for Campus Crusade for Christ's team. Unfortunately this year I will have to stand on the sidelines cheering friends on due to the inability to play, because of an injury I had in early September. However, I will be writing my next article on the subject to let all of the parents out there know about this fun sport as well as include some of the photos I've taken over the years. I enjoy taking photos so look forward to seeing them!

If anyone comes to visit Michigan Tech, you may see me around campus, because I'm also a Tour Guide for the Admissions Office. I really enjoy giving tours to prospective students and their families. I've been doing tours for a year now and have loved getting to meet new people. Any questions are more than welcome, because I like trying to assist people as much as possible.

As I mentioned, I enjoy doing activities in the Houghton community as well. I attend Evangel Baptist Church in Houghton, where I volunteer my time in the nursery on Wednesday nights for the Awana Children's groups. The people in the church community have been very inviting and friendly, which makes volunteering for the church event enjoyable. Also, I have a great appreciation for animals and so I try to spend several hours every week at the Copper Country Humane Society, playing with the cats and dogs before they get adopted. This past semester has been lots of fun as many of the animals I spent time with this summer and in the early part of the fall have gotten placed into good homes.

So, this a little bit about life at Michigan Tech for me so far. I'm looking forward to this upcoming semester's events and the articles that I will be writing. As I continue to write for ParentNet, I highly encourage that if there are any questions, topics, or other suggestions that anyone feels important for me to discuss, please feel free to contact me at my personal email address and I shall do my best to respond to them. As I mentioned above, look forward to reading about the sport of Broomball next week.

Gneiss to meet you all, (just a little bit of geology humor)—

Katie
