Family Weekend

K-Day is a great annual celebration of our Keweenaw Peninsula. Students play games, such as Husky Operation seen here; eat great food; listen to bands; and take an afternoon off.

School has started

Orientation week is now over and a new year has started.  Hopefully, if you came up to Michigan Tech over the last week, you enjoyed your experience with us.  I am glad I got to talk with many of you during the picnic and university expo.  This week is filled with many events for students to ease back into school.

Student Groups

Just about all student groups will be holding their first meetings of the semester this week.  This first month of school is a big recruitment time for student organizations.  I know in Circle K, we have already had several events during orientation and have several more planned for the following weeks.

Student organizations are a great way for your students to get involved on campus and make a lot of new friends.  Make sure to have them read the bulletin boards around campus and the table tents in the residence halls and Memorial Union Building.  These are the most common ways that student groups use to advertise their events.  Remind your students to not get too involved though.  It is easy to get over-involved and start letting other things, like school work, slide.  Students just need to find that happy medium so they can have a lot of fun yet still do well in school.

K-Day

This Friday, classes will be dismissed at noon for the annual K-Day celebration.  K-Day is short for Keweenaw Day and is a longstanding tradition at Michigan Tech.  Student organizations head out to McLain State Park and set up displays and demonstrations for students.  In my 4 years here at Tech, K-Day has only been rained out once, which was last year.  All the previous years were beautiful with nice weather, lots of things to do outside and of course Lake Superior to swim in.  There is also a lot of free food, live music, and the introduction of the Homecoming contestants.

Students have their choice of either driving out to McLain or taking a bus.  Buses in years past have left the Memorial Union Building about every half hour to take students out to the park.  I am hoping that for my last semester here, we will once again have nice weather and be able to enjoy the outdoors.  If it does rain, everything will be moved up to the Student Development Complex.  To learn more about K-Day and to view past K-Day photos, please visit the K-Day website.

With Labor Day on Monday and K-Day on Friday, the first week at Michigan Tech is short and relaxing.  It is a great way to enter into a new year without having to stress out too much.

If there are ever any concerns or topics that you feel should be addressed, please send me a personal email and I will try my best to include them in my future articles.

Until next week,
