Student Groups—
Service, Religious, and Cultural

I have received several emails from parents asking about different areas their student can get involved in on campus. I have decided to dedicate at least two articles to briefly describe the plethora of student organizations at Michigan Tech. This week I will be touching on the different service, religious, and cultural groups on campus. A full listing of all student organizations can be found at the Student Organizations website. There you can see all the student organizations listed alphabetically or by category.

Service
To start off with, I will go through the major philanthropic groups on campus. Although there are many groups that participate in community service, these three groups are dedicated strictly to it. If your student volunteered in high school or just wants to give back to the local community and campus, be sure to have them contact one of these groups. They are always looking for new members.

  1. Circle K International—This group is the collegiate level of Kiwanis International. Circle K participates in most campus events as well as many community events. They also participate in many social events both on and off campus. Leadership positions are available from the first meeting a student attends. The motto of the club is to have fun while helping others.
  2. Alpha Phi Omega—This is a national fraternity that is affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America. APO was established to develop leadership, promote friendship, and provide service to the community.
  3. Habitat for Humanity—This college group helps assists Habitat for Humanity International by working with local H4H projects. The group also participates in the collegiate challenge. This is where the group travels to a city for spring break and works with other colleges to build a large number of houses in a small time.

Religious
There are a large variety of religious student groups on the Michigan Tech campus. Many of the groups are associated with the local churches in the Houghton/Hancock area. The groups often hold events on campus to help raise the student’s awareness of them. Most of the groups hold weekly Bible studies and group meetings. A full listing of all religious student groups can be found here.

Cultural
With all of the cultural diversity on the Michigan Tech campus, there are a number of ethnic and cultural groups to consider. These groups are set up to help students from different cultures create social networks quickly and easily. The clubs also work to promote their cultural heritage and share it with the campus and community. There are a number of different cultural groups, so be sure to read the descriptions and have your student contact them if interested.

Hopefully your student decides to participate in or become a member of some of the groups I have described. These three types of groups presented this week will help your student grow and become a well-rounded adult. Next week I will talk about the different sports, media, and campus-wide program groups.

If there are ever any concerns or topics that you feel should be addressed, please send me a personal email and I will try my best to include them in my future articles.

Until next week,
