Commencement 2007

The photos on this page are of First Year Experience students working on their 2007 Winter Carnival statue. They won first place in their division.

First Year Experience

In the past weeks, there has been quite a bit of discussion surrounding the First Year Experience (FYE) program.  FYE is for incoming freshmen students and is designed to help students better adapt to life as a college student.  FYE students reside in a co-ed house in Wadsworth hall which is alcohol and chemical free.

By entering into FYE, students are guaranteed to be around other freshmen.  They are also required to participate in many hall activities, attend sporting events, and get involved in other campus activities.  For many students, this is a great way to get involved early in their college careers with campus activities.  To stay in the FYE program, there are some participation requirements that need to be met and they can be found here.

FYE provides guidance for freshmen students through a support network of resident assistants, mentors, and program coordinators.  The job of these staff members is to create a close-knit community of students that all have something in common, being new to the college experience.  This community that is created often leads to strong friendships that last throughout college.  Some students also return to FYE and become a mentor or resident assistant themselves.

FYE is known on campus for participating in a lot of activities.  Every year, the group participates in the month-long snow statue at winter carnival; not to mention entering almost all of the special events.  FYE is also known for their annual participation in Safehouse.  Safehouse is the trick-or-treating event that takes place in the residence halls.  Last year, FYE went didn’t hold anything back when it came to trying to scare kids, parents, and fellow college students.  FYE tries to participate in as many intramural sports as possible as well.

If there are ever any topics that you feel should be addressed, please send me a personal email and I will try my best to include them in my future articles.

Until next week,
