Lower Hungarian Falls

Waterfalls have been roaring lately, including the lower Hungarian Falls.

Warm Spring Break

When spring break hits Michigan Tech, the students go in all different directions.  A large majority go home to visit family and friends.  Others take this time to go on a short vacation to forget about school.  Not everyone takes off for the break though.  There are a good number of students, including me, that stuck around Houghton for our spring breaks.

Starting last week and continuing through the weekend, temperatures here in Houghton have been in the 40’s and Sunday almost broke a record around 55 degrees.  Although some skiers and snow lovers might be upset, the warm weather does bring about some benefits.

With everything melting in the milder temperatures this weekend, there has been a lot of water flowing.  This was evident as my friends and I decided to go looking at waterfalls.  The waterfalls that we visited have melted and are running strong with all of the snow melting and feeding them.  Even though the temps are mild and the snow is melting, there is still a good amount of snow on the ground.  We ended up having to snowshoe to Hungarian Falls in Hubbell.  It was a fun time as we are snowshoeing in just long-sleeve shirts and jeans.

I have also talked with people who haven’t let the warm weather keep them from the ski hill.  They said Mont Ripley is running fast as there is no fresh powder.  Also, since there are very few students still up here, the hill is fairly empty and there is no waiting.

The warm weather is a nice change of pace from the cold, wintry days, although this is still winter.  Weather reports are saying that the warm weather will only be lasting for a couple of more days.  Later this week, a new system will move through and the mild weather will turn cold again.  By the time most students come back to Michigan Tech, it will be back into the 30’s and there will most likely be some fresh snow on the ground.

Hopefully your students are enjoying and making the most of their time off, wherever they may be.  Don’t forget to wish your students luck before they head back to college.

If there are ever any topics that you feel should be addressed, please send me a personal email and I will try my best to include that in my future articles.

Until next week,

Jeremy
