Career Fair

It's the countdown to the Winter Job Fair. The Michigan Tech Career Center has a number of events to help students prepare for the time they meet with potential employers.

Michigan Tech Career Center

Whether your student is a freshman, senior, graduate or somewhere in between, the Michigan Tech Career Center is there to help them out. The Career Center is located in the Harold Meese building which is right across the street from Jim’s Foodmart. Their hours are 8 a.m.–5 p.m. and appointments can be set up to talk to a career counselor; not to mention they accept walk-ins if your student has a quick question.

Most students never even know about the Career Center until the time of the career fair. Every semester, in preparation for the career fair, the career center holds several highly valuable discussions and opportunities for students to ready themselves to talk to companies. If your student cannot make it to the discussions, they are posted online on the career center website. The calendar of events for this semester is as follows:

  • MUB Resume Blitz—Tuesday January 23–24
Memorial Union Building, Room: Commons Area, Time: 10:00 a.m. –2:00 p.m.
Stop by for a quick resume review.

  • Resume Critique Week—Monday January 29–Febuary 2
Harold Meese Center, Room: Time: 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
Get your resume critiqued before Winter Job Fair.

  • Interviewing Success-—Wednesday January 31
    Fisher Hall, Room: 135, Time: 6:00 p.m.
Learn what to expect at an interview and how to answer tough questions.

  • Mock Interview Week—Monday February 12–16
Harold Meese Center, Room: Time: 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
Practice interviewing and get vital feedback to strengthen your interview skills. Visit the Career Center to schedule an appointment.

  • Corporate Connections—Monday February 19
    Fisher Hall, Room: 135, Time: 6:00 p.m.
An open panel discussion with company representatives. Ask questions, get advice, and learn about what companies look for in students.

  • Winter Job Fair--Tuesday February 20
Student Development Complex, Room: Time: 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.

The Career Center does much more than just bringing companies to campus and helping students write resumes and cover letters. New to the Career Center is the MyPlan and InterviewStream online tools. MyPlan is an online career-planning site that helps students determine the correct major and career for them. The site consists of many personality tests and interest surveys so it can map out the likes and dislikes of each student. InterviewStream, which I haven’t used yet, but plan to this semester, is a tool that allows your student to sit at a computer in front of a webcam and go through a mock interview. The student selects the type of questions and everything that they want the interview to consist of. Once they are done, they can then go back and look at the video of themselves. One of my friends had no idea she bit her lip and touched her face so much during an interview until she was able to see it on video.

So whether your student is looking for a summer internship, a coop, or a full-time career, the Career Center is really the place to go to get all the gears turning.

On a quick side note, even if your student is a freshman this year, I would suggest that they still try to attend the career fair on February 20. Even if they are not looking for an internship/coop quite yet, just being there and talking with some of the company recruiters can really get students ready for future fairs. Not to mention, I have had more than a couple recruiters simply recognize my face from one year to the next, so it makes it much easier to talk with them.

If there are ever any topics that you feel should be addressed, please send me a personal email and I will try my best to include that in my future articles.

Until next week,
