Make friends and a resume!

Making new friends can be one of the most memorable parts of the college experience. And now that week 3 is in full swing, hopefully your student has found a great group of friends to share their college years with. And if they haven’t, don’t worry, that’s not a problem! The beginning of each semester always brings plenty of recruitment events for student organizations where your student can hang out with other cool students and make even more new friends!

Student Orgs
There are more than 200 student organizations on our campus. That means there are a variety of ways in which your student can get involved in student life. I have found that student organizations are one of the best ways to meet new people because they tend to attract similar types of people to their activities.

On the student organization website, http://www.sa.mtu.edu/stulife/stuorg/, students can search through our seemingly endless list of organizations. The website lists description information, contact information, meeting locations, and club websites. I would recommend that first-year students limit the number of organizations they join in their first year to make sure they can adjust to the hectic schedule of college life. However, I also recommend that as students go through their college years, they join a variety of organizations to gain different experiences and meet different types of people.

Our Greek organizations on campus also offer many leadership and social opportunities. Approximately 13 percent of our students on campus are involved in Greek organizations.  There are also professional Greek organizations that can help students with alumni connections for job opportunities. If your student is interested in joining a sorority or fraternity, most “rushes” (recruitment events) are held during this time of year. For more information on Greek life, please visit: http://greek.mtu.edu/.

Our friends at the Career Center
This time of year is also great for preparing for a future career, or at least a summer co-op or internship. Our friends at the Michigan Tech Career Center can help your student learn what to expect in interviews, create a resume, and prepare for the Career Fair on Tuesday, October 3.

This week, the Career Center is hosting resume critique week. Students can stop by the Career Center to have their resume reviewed by Career Center staff or community volunteers. They should sign up for an appointment by contacting the Career Center by calling them at (906) 487-2313 (the Career Center is located in the Harold Meese Building across from Jim’s Foodmart).

On Tuesday, September 19 at 6 pm, the Career Center will also be hosting an “Interviewing Success” seminar, so that students can learn about preparing for an interview. The presentation will be held in DOW, room 641. And if your student wants to practice their interviewing techniques, the Career Center is also hosting Mock Interview Week next week (September 25-29). Students can practice interviewing and receive feedback on how to improve before the Career Fair arrives.

And no matter if your student is a first-year or fifth-year, it’s never too late or too early to prepare for job opportunities.
