The Michigan Tech Pep Band participates in the Bridgefest parade.
Who knew a bridge
could be so fun?
Aside from our civil engineers who think anything involving structures and concrete is fun, most people would probably agree that a festival surrounding the celebration of our Portage lift bridge wouldn’t sound too exciting. Well, if any of you have visited Michigan Tech or have vacationed in the Houghton area, you would know that most people would be incorrect with that assumption. This coming weekend, from Friday, June 16–Sunday, June 18, Houghton is gearing up for Bridgefest 2006!
So what is Bridgefest?
According to the Bridgefest website, “Bridgefest was organized to celebrate the "birthday" of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge, which provides a vital link between the communities of Houghton and Hancock, as well as a link to the Keweenaw Peninsula.” If you’d like to learn more about the bridge itself, please visit: http://history.cityofhoughton.com/waterfront.html.
As a local student, I can guarantee that Bridgefest is one of the best times to visit the beautiful Houghton area in the summer. Up until my college summers, I was always involved in Bridgefest in some way. I started out marching in the Bridgefest parade with my Girl Scout troop, and eventually began performing as part of the Houghton High School marching band. Although I have been away from the area each summer since I graduated high school, I know that many different organizations from Michigan Tech are also involved with volunteering at the famous Houghton Rotary Seafood Fest along with participating in the parade and other various weekend festivities.
Although the parade has always been one of my favorite Bridgefest events, there are also many other fun activities and shows which take place. Friday kicks off with the Copper Country homecoming photo display and then ends with the much anticipated parade and Rotary dance on the Houghton waterfront. Saturday is when the majority of Bridgefest events take place. The day kicks off with a children’s fishing derby, and continues with demos, exhibits, live music, food, beach volleyball, a water ski show, a lighted boat parade, and then ends with my second favorite event: fireworks!
Bridgefest will then conclude on Sunday with continued events from Saturday, and then end with the Bridgefest Pig Roast. If you would like to see the full weekend’s events in more detail, please visit: http://www.bridgefestfun.com/events.shtml.
So now that you know more about Bridgefest, I hope you will be able to visit the area and take part in our Bridgefest celebrations during some point in your student’s college years at Michigan Tech. But if you can’t get away and visit in person, you can also visit virtually by browsing the beautiful photo gallary online at: http://www.bridgefestfun.com/photos.shtml.
And one final note, this week is the week I will be traveling to Calgary, Canada with Cummins, so stay logged in for next week’s article that will showcase my travels in my June internship update.
Until next week,
