Final Grades and Summer
Final Grades
The wait for spring semester grades should now be over for you and your student. As of Wednesday, May 3, final grades were posted on our online system known as “Banweb.” Students can login at https://www.banweb.mtu.edu/pls/owa/twbkwbis.P_WWWLogin. At this page they will be prompted for their MTU ID number (not their email login ID), and then their PIN number which would have been automatically set to their birthdate if they haven’t changed it since their first semester.
Once your student is logged in, they will be at the Main Menu. From this point, they should click on “Student Services & Financial Aid,” and then from that page, click on the link for “Student Records.” Then on the Student Records page, click on “Final Grades,” and then select Spring 2006 for the current term, and click “Submit.” They should then see the page that displays their final grades.
I hope your student was happy with their grades for the semester. If the worse case scenario happened, and they failed a class, remind them that it’s not the end of the world, and that it happens to many students, especially their first year away from home. Students can always retake classes to get a better understanding of the material. If your student also wants to make up or get ahead in credits while being at home this summer, they can take online classes like I did a few summers ago. Michigan Tech offers a few online graduate level classes and then students can also earn transfer credits by taking classes at other schools. There are certain rules that apply to online classes taken from other schools and as to what counts as transfer credits at Michigan Tech in general, but if that sounds like a good option for your student, they can find out more information about it at http://www.admin.mtu.edu/em/students/records/transfer.php.
Summer Classes: Session A
Of course another great way to get ahead in credits or to make up classes is to take classes on campus this summer. And just when you thought classes were over, they begin again. Our first track of summer classes, also known as “Session A” began on Monday of this week. As I mentioned in previous articles before, I highly recommend that your student stay on our campus for at least one summer during their college career. Why? Because there are a lot of fun things to do in the Keweenaw area during the summer months, and because of the beautiful scenery and comfortable weather.
Summer classes do operate at a faster pace than during our regular 14-week semesters. During the summer, semesters are only 7 weeks long, classes take place four days a week and class sessions are longer than an hour and a half each. And if your student missed our registration deadline for Session A, they can still register online for Session B, which begins Monday, June 26, at https://www.banweb.mtu.edu/pls/owa/twbkwbis.P_WWWLogin.
Being a Summer Tour Guide
And if your student is looking for great work experience and extra spending money this summer, I also highly recommend that they become a campus tour guide. I know that our Admissions Office is still looking for students with blocks of time available at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., and 2 p.m. on Monday–Friday. I love giving summer campus tours, and surprising as it is to most people, June, July, and August bring some of our busiest weeks for tours.
If being a campus tour guide sounds like something your student might be good at and interested in, please have them email our Assistant Director for Recruitment, Bill Roberts, at wrrobert@mtu.edu. I think he is a great person to work for, and he will make sure your student is fully trained and feeling ready before they give their first tour. There are a few requirements that your student must meet in order to become a tour guide, but the main one is that they must have been a student for at least one semester on our campus.
Before I conclude for this week, I would also like to mention that I have been reading many of your emails on our ParentNet list over the past few days, and have come up with a few topics to help you with your concerns if your student is coming up for orientation in August. So don’t worry, there will be many more informative articles to come over the summer.
Until next week,
