A slice of campus life written by an MTU student
The BS in Exercise Science degree will provide a strong, scientific foundation for students seeking employment in the health and fitness industry as well as for those seeking advanced degrees in the health and allied health professions.
Finding the perfect degree
For those of you with first year students, you may have a student who came to Michigan Tech as an undecided or undeclared major. Now that their first year is almost over, it’s time to make sure your student has started thinking about what area they want to declare as their official major. Being an undecided major will not hurt your student until they start getting further along in their studies. However, as a current student, I would recommend making sure they are at least thinking about specific degree. Because if your student does not declare a specific major within the next year, it may prolong their graduation date.
The College of Engineering has a great degree program here called Engineering Fundamentals. If your student was enrolled in this program, they will have already been through exploratory programs this year which looked at the specialized areas of engineering that students can study at Michigan Tech. Then by your student’s second year (perhaps next year), they should already have made a decision as to which degree program fits them the best. The College of Sciences and Arts also has a General Sciences and Arts program that helps narrow students’ degree program decisions down to the Sciences and Arts focus.
Now, if your student has decided that their current degree isn’t quite the right program for them, they should perhaps consider a new degree that is on the horizon at Michigan Tech. The Exercise Science degree has been proposed and accepted by the Michigan Tech Board of Control and is currently pending final approval by the state of Michigan.
Exercise Science would be a bachelor of science degree. The main idea behind the degree would be to “provide a strong scientific basis for students seeking advanced degrees in the health and allied health professions as well as those seeking practical skills for employment in the health fitness industry.” The core classes will consist of biological sciences, chemistry, physics, and mathematics, along with exercise sciences.
According to the Michigan Tech Exercise Science website, all students are required to register for an internship in Exercise Science. Internships can take place in community health and fitness centers, as well as in cardiac and exercise rehabilitation programs.
Also according to the Exercise Science website, “This degree provides students an entrance into a field that has a broad choice of career options. These range from the health fitness industry (e.g. personal and corporate center trainers, respiratory and cardiopulmonary therapists) to professional degrees (e.g. physical therapy, chiropractic, and medical degrees).” The degree is expected to open to students for fall 2006.
A news release about the new Exercise Science degree and other new degree options for the fall, tells how Michigan Tech is continually expanding programs to bring students more opportunities. And I can tell you personally that opportunity is what being in college is all about!
