A Weekend of Previews and Bowling
For those of you who traveled up to MTU this past weekend to visit us at Preview Day, I hope you enjoyed your weekend! I know that I sure did! Tours on Friday went well, and so did my session that I presented with a few other students on the “real” story behind Michigan Tech. I hope the weekend helped you to feel more comfortable with your student’s decision, and I also hope I’ll get to see you all again!
This weekend on Saturday I also got to participate in another fun event: Bowl For Kids 2006! Bowl For Kids is a fundraiser event sponsored by the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Houghton. Anyone who wants to bowl can fundraise money for their programs to help with their administrative costs. This is the fourth year I have participated in the event, and it’s always a great time!
MTU Circle K bowlers participated in the Bowl For Kids 2006! It was held at the Copper Bowl Lanes as a fundraiser to support local children’s mentoring programs.
Many MTU students form bowling teams to do fundraising, so perhaps your son or daughter was on a team as well! I formed a team with Circle K, and together we fundraised almost $500! If your student is ever interested in being a mentor of children in the Houghton area, please have them contact Big Brothers Big Sisters, or visit their website at: http://www.bbbsa.org. It’s a great cause that helps the children in our local area or in the areas where your student is from.
So with a recap of this past weekend, I also thought I should share an upcoming event with you for the week. I just recently found out about the Earth Week 2006 Film Festival that has been occurring every Thursday in March. Earth Week at MTU is sponsored by MTU Students for Environmental Sustainability (ESC). You can learn more about their programs at http://www.esc.mtu.edu.
Coming up for this Thursday, ESC will be playing the movie called The End of Suburbia (http://www.endofsuburbia.com). The movie will start at 7:00 p.m. in the School of Forest Resources & Environmental Sciences building, room G002. The movie will look at the newfound wealth in the suburbia of North America since WWII. Opportunities like this are great for your student, if they are interested in environmental or societal issues and want to meet other students that share the same interests.
Until next week,
