A slice of campus life written by an MTU student
The Winter Job Fair is Tuesday, February 21, on the MTU campus.
Preparing for future success
As a fourth year student, I have been on campus long enough to understand the value of our Career Center’s services. One of those services that has been the most beneficial to me is the job fairs. The next job fair to take place is the winter job fair, which will be held on Tuesday, February 21. Since it is fast approaching, it is important that your student knows about the opportunities for preparation that are available.
Two preparation events that have already passed were the resume writing and e-recruiting seminar, which took place on January 18, and the resume blitz (free resume help) that was held January 24–25. If your student missed these events, they can always make an appointment with the Career Center staff. They can be contacted by email at career@mtu.edu or by phone at (906) 487-2313. The Career Center is located in the Harold Meese Center, which is across from Jim’s Foodmart.
This week, from January 30–February 3, is Resume Critique Week. Students can get their resume critiqued so they know what changes to make to help their resume stand out in the hands of recruiters. Students must contact or visit the Career Center to set up an appointment.
On Wednesday, February 1, a seminar called “Interviewing Success” will be held in Fisher Hall 135, at 6:00 p.m. This seminar is to help students learn about what to expect at an interview. The seminar offers advice on how to dress, how to approach a recruiter/interviewer, and gives practice interview questions and the correct approach for how to answer them. I attended this seminar last year before I went to my first job fair, and a lot of the questions the seminar covered were ones that I was later asked in an interview! If your student is nervous or worried about interviewing, this is the perfect event for them to attend!
Looking at next week, from Monday–Friday February 13–17, mock interviews will be held at the Career Center. This allows students to practice interviewing, and to get feedback about their interviewing skills. Once again, students must set up an appointment at the Career Center to attend this event.
On Monday, February 20, an open panel discussion with company representatives called “Corporate Connections” will be held in Fisher Hall 135 at 6:00 p.m. This is a good opportunity to ask questions and to learn about what companies look for when they recruit students.
Finally, the Winter Job Fair will take place on Tuesday, February 21, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. It will be held at the Student Development Complex (SDC). Students get to dress up in business suits and hand out copies of their resume to recruiters. Even if your student is a freshman and may not be particularly interested in finding a summer internship or co-op quite yet, it is a great opportunity to walk around and meet representatives from different companies. Students can learn a lot about what companies are looking for so then they can come back even more prepared the year after when they are ready for career-related employment.
I believe that the bottom line is that you can never be too prepared. More information about job fairs and how to prepare for them can be found at our Career Center’s website. By logging in, MTU students are also automatically a part of our online e-recruiting, which is also found at the Career Center website. There are currently 105 companies registered to attend the job fair in a few weeks, so it should be a very rewarding experience. Please encourage your student to check it out so they don’t miss out!
One last note, as I mentioned in my very first ParentNet article, I am honored to say that I am a Winter Carnival Queen Finalist. The Queen’s coronation takes place this Saturday, February 4, which is one of the kick-off events for Winter Carnival 2006. As you may have guessed, next week’s article will be devoted to the experiences I have shared thus far as a queen candidate and Winter Carnival participant.
Until next week,
