Multiple Biomedical Data Science Faculty Positions
College of Computing
Michigan Technological University
Type: Full-time
Category: Biomedical Data Science / Health Informatics
The College of Computing at Michigan Technological University invites applications
for multiple tenure track faculty positions in the broad areas of biomedical data
science and health informatics. Data Science, in all of its forms, is a major priority
for the College, and these positions are critical to that effort. The College currently
offers 15 degree programs, including a BS in Data Science, MS in Data Science, and
MS in Health Informatics. Preliminary discussions regarding a PhD in Data Science
have begun, and the College is actively planning for a Department of Data Science
to house these programs, faculty, and staff.
The anticipated start date is August 2025.
The successful candidate will have an earned doctorate in data science, health informatics,
bioinformatics, computational medicine, computer science, or a closely related discipline
at the time of employment. The successful candidate will be a member of the Department of Applied Computing within the College, although, depending upon background, joint appointments with
other departments are possible. Primary consideration will be for applicants at the
rank of Assistant Professor, although applicants with the education, experience, and
accomplishments commensurate with a higher rank may be considered for an appointment
at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. Applicants with research and/or teaching
interests in all areas of biomedical data science are encouraged to apply, including
AI/ML in biomedicine and healthcare, clinical decision support systems, health data
analytics and big data, computational epidemiology, medical imaging and computer vision,
longitudinal data analysis, mHealth and Internet of Medical Things, biomedical data
ethics and governance, security and privacy, and similar areas.
Michigan Tech is Michigan’s flagship technological university, and starting next year
will be one of only four Carnegie classified R1 institutions in Michigan. The university
provides its graduates with an extremely high return on investment through its academic
rigor and focus on experiential learning. Located in Michigan’s scenic Upper Peninsula’s
Anishinaabe/Ojibwe lands on the south shore of Lake Superior, the university also
provides a high standard of living. The community offers a small-town environment
with outstanding four-season recreational opportunities.
Founded in 2019, the College of Computing at Michigan Tech is Michigan’s first and largest computing- focused college. The
College is in a phase of rapid growth and investment, including multiple new faculty
positions, new academic programs, and planning for a new building. Since 2019, enrollment
in the college has grown by two-thirds and research expenditures have tripled. Last
year alone, Michigan Tech climbed 26 spots nationally, from 115th to 89th, for computing
and information science research expenditures (source: NSF-HERD survey). The College
is organized into two departments, the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Applied Computing, with several programs shared by faculty in both. Areas of research strength include:
applied AI/ML, computing education, cybersecurity, data science, health informatics,
mechatronics and robotics, software engineering, and systems and scalable architectures.
Providing additional research support, the successful candidates will be supported
by two of the university’s fastest-growing research institutes, the Health Research Institute and the Institute of Computing and Cybersystems (ICC). The latter is composed of multiple centers, including centers focused on Biocomputing
& Digital Health and AI. Faculty with research interests in biomedical data science
are expected to be active contributors to the Computational Science and Engineering
PhD program, which supports doctoral research in a wide array of engineering and science
problems through the application of software and hardware technologies. Finally, the
new H-STEM Complex opened in January 2024, which has significantly increased our biomedical
research capacity and serves as a focal point for biomedical research. Finally, as
a result of these cross-disciplinary collaborative efforts, the university is successfully
building a vibrant biomedical research enterprise where interdisciplinary expertise
is shared and valued.
Michigan Tech is proud to be an ADVANCE institution that has received multiple rounds of National Science Foundation support
to increase diversity, inclusion, and the participation and advancement of women and
underrepresented individuals in STEM.
Michigan Tech attracts world-class faculty who enrich the educational experience of
smart, motivated, and adventurous students. Applicants who are committed to promoting
a sense of belonging and contributing to an equitable and inclusive learning environment
for all are strongly encouraged to apply. Please see our Engagement and Belonging website.
Review of applications will begin on October 31, 2024, and continue until the positions
are filled. Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae and brief research
and teaching statements, and arrange to have at least three reference letters submitted.
We strongly encourage applicants to address the required and desired qualifications
in their cover letter along with an explanation of how they will contribute to the
Vision and Mission of Michigan Tech. Applicants for a senior position may include
the names of at least three references in lieu of letters. Applications must be submitted
online at https://www.employment.mtu.edu/cw/en-us/job/493709. For more information,
please contact the search committee chair Dr. Guy Hembroff.
Michigan Tech recognizes the importance of supporting faculty members’ partners; candidates
selected for on-campus interviews will be invited to bring a guest. Additional details
