Parents, guardians, and family members are welcomed and encouraged to visit their student and Michigan Tech’s campus. Visiting campus allows your student to introduce you to their home away from home at Michigan Tech. The Keweenaw Peninsula boasts extensive natural beauty, a small-town community feel, and year-round recreation and tourism opportunities that visiting families are bound to enjoy.
If you plan to visit the Houghton area during one of the prime visiting times listed below, we recommend making your hotel reservations as early as one year in advance, as vacancies fill quickly.
- Orientation and Move-in weekend (August)
- Family Weekend (October)
- Homecoming (October)
- Open House (October, geared toward prospective students and their family members)
- Midyear Commencement (December)
- Winter Carnival (February)
- Preview Day (March, geared toward prospective students and their family members)
- Spring Commencement (May)
Please check the University Calendar to view the specific dates for these events each year.
Family visits allow you to connect with your student and get a feel for their university experience. To ensure an enjoyable visit, talk with your student about your plans. Scheduling visits at mutually convenient times will allow everyone involved to have fun and enjoy one another’s company. Students are very busy balancing academics, study time, weekend activities and involvements, and family time. By planning a visit together with your student, you will show respect for their schedule and independence, as well as demonstrate that you still care and want to be involved in their life.
