Step 8: Other Important Things to Consider

Immunizations

We highly recommend that you have the following immunizations before coming to school:

  • Meningococcal vaccination
  • Tetanus-Diphtheria-Accellular Pertussis vaccine (a primary series and a booster within the last ten years)
  • Two doses of measles vaccine or Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR)
  • Varicella vaccine (two doses if you have not had chicken pox)
  • Hepatitis A vaccine
  • Hepatitis B series (three doses)
  • HPV–Human Papilloma Virus (for females 11–26 years of age)

In addition, it is recommended that you get a flu shot in October or November. Flu shot clinics will be available on campus. For more information on immunizations, see the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website.

Safety First Alert

Michigan Tech’s Safety First Alert communication service allows you to receive emergency and time-sensitive notifications via voice, email, and text message. You will receive an email in your HuskyMail account prompting you to sign up (or opt out) in August during Orientation.

Family Partners

Your parents and family members are an important factor in your success at college. We view your family as a partner in fostering your growth and development, and we encourage them to respect your independence as a young adult in the process of becoming responsible, accountable, and capable.

You and your family should review and discuss Michigan Tech’s parent and guardian philosophy so you are aware of our policies for communicating with families. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) does not permit public colleges and universities to provide information about students without their permission.

Many useful links for parents and family can be found on the Michigan Tech Parents and Family page.

Guest Access

You can grant access to select individuals allowing them to view your student record information. If you would like your parents or family members to have access to view your grades, course schedule, and online bills, or to have the ability to pay your student bill online, you must authorize their access. To authorize Guest Access, log on to Banweb through the Husky Hub. For more information, please contact the Registrar’s Office or call 906-487-2319.
