Congratulations prospective graduate! Commencement is rapidly approaching! In order to be eligible to participate in the ceremony and be listed in the program you must:

  • Be registered in the classes that will complete all your outstanding degree requirements.
  • Have a Graduation Application on file in the Degree Services Office by Friday, October 4, 2013. If you have not done so, please complete your Graduation Application by accessing this link. After Friday, October 4, late additions and listing in the commencement program cannot be guaranteed.
  • Once your Graduation Application is on file with Degree Services, your name will be added to the Undergraduate Candidates list on the commencement website through weekly updates.

Caps and Gowns are required to participate in commencement and must be ordered online starting on Wednesday, October 9th. The gown is the property of the graduate. Rental garb is not available.

Attend Gradfest at the Campus Store on Wednesday, October 9th from 2–5 pm to meet with representatives from Balfour, Michigan Tech Alumni Relations and the Career Center. Enjoy free pizza and refreshments. Also, take 25% off all Michigan Tech insignia items – diploma frames, clothing and souvenirs on Wednesday, October 9 only.

Students participating in the Spring Commencement 2014 will purchase their caps and gowns beginning in February 2014.

ROTC commissionees are dressed in uniform and do not wear academic garb.

International graduates or graduates who have studied or volunteered abroad: Indicate your global status by wearing an international graduation sash. Sashes depict your country’s flag and are designed to add distinction to your graduation attire. Sashes can be ordered directly through Vision Wear.

Honor Cords represent outstanding academic achievement and are provided by the University. The Campus Bookstore will have a list of those who qualify for honor cords. Honor cords designations are based on overall GPA accumulated prior to the graduating semester and are determined by the Registrar’s Office: Summa Cum Laude (3.90 and above) designated by a gold cord, Magna Cum Laude (3.70-3.89) designated by a silver cord, and Cum Laude (3.50-3.69) designated by a copper cord.

Honor cords are available for pick-up at the Campus Store with your cap and gown.

Commencement Tickets may be obtained by presenting a photo ID at the Customer Service Center located in the Campus Bookstore, between the hours of 8:30 am and 4:30 pm beginning Monday, December 2, through Thursday, December 12, 2013. You may receive up to four (4) tickets at that time. There is open seating for the audience.

Students who need extra tickets: On Friday, December 13, any extra or unclaimed tickets will be distributed from the SDC Central Ticket Office on a first-come, first-served basis.

Commencement Rehearsal will be held on Friday, December 13 at 1:30 pm. Students will line up in the SDC Multi-purpose room and will proceed into the SDC Wood Gym. Rehearsal lasts approximately one hour. You do not need to wear your cap and gown.

ROTC commissionees will march and sit together and will receive recognition from their commanding officer. ROTC commissionees will line up in the multi-purpose room.

Commencement Ceremony will be held on Saturday, December 14, at 10:30 am in the SDC Wood Gym. Graduates should arrive no later than 9:45 am. Family members should be seated in the audience and not with the graduates. The ceremony lasts approximately two hours. The SDC Ice Arena and Wood Gym are alcohol-free facilities.

Special Needs seating is available for guests. Should special seating accommodations be required, please contact Emily Walikainen in the Registrar’s Office, 906-487-2319 or emilyw@mtu.edu by Friday, December 6. Space for wheelchairs will be provided; however, Michigan Tech is unable to provide wheelchairs.

A Signer will be present throughout the ceremony to assist the hearing impaired.

Commencement Photo arrangements have been made with a professional photographer to take a photo of each degree candidate as he or she is congratulated on stage. Ordering information will be mailed to your home address or emailed within 4-6 weeks. Please make certain that your current home address is on file with the Registrar’s Office.
