Research in the area of human-centered design focuses on the needs, desires, limitations, and capabilities of human users during each step of the design process for products and systems.

Research Groups

Mind, Music and Machine Lab

This interdisciplinary research group focuses on the integration of the human mind (e.g., emotional aspects as well as cognitive aspects), audition (e.g., speech and non-speech sounds, music, noise, etc), and machinery (e.g., computer systems, mobile devices, in-vehicle technologies, wearable computers, and home appliances). The primary research goal is to better understand the mechanisms of the human mind and design better human–machine systems. Recent projects include the design of multimodal interfaces for mobile devices, based on multiple resources theory; in-vehicle emotion detection and regulation systems, based on situation awareness and various affect models; and interactive sonification for informal learning environments, based on embodied cognition and an interactive-learning framework.

Virtual Reality Lab

Virtual reality systems, such as 3-D head-mounted displays, have many useful applications spanning the areas of training, prototyping, education, and entertainment. The Virtual Reality Laboratory focuses on making this technology less expensive and more useful. In addition, our research group also uses the technology as a platform to learn more about human spatial cognition.
