Michigan Tech
Little Huskies Child Development Center
Enrollment Policy

Philosophy

The Little Huskies Child Development Center exists to encourage and support each child to grow and develop in a caring and nurturing environment.  The Center will be an asset to the University and supports the first goal of the University’s Strategic Plan to attract and support world-class faculty, staff, and students.  The Center is one of the many people-focused work-life initiatives intended to provide an outstanding work and educational environment for Michigan Tech faculty, staff, and students.

Enrollment Criteria

The Center gives priority to children whose parents or legal guardians are students, faculty or staff of Michigan Tech.

Application Fee and Waitlist

If you are considering enrolling your child at the Michigan Tech Little Huskies Child Development Center, you should complete and return the Application along with your non-refundable application fee of $50 per child if you are a student parent or $100 if you are a faculty or staff parent. The deposit is required to be placed on the waitlist. This fee does not guarantee placement in the Center.  You may cancel your waitlist reservation at any time by giving written notice to the Center’s director.

  • Children already enrolled in Little Huskies are not required to re-enroll.
  • The program’s first commitment is to the families that are currently being served.  After a family is enrolled, siblings have priority for openings.
  • Children taken out of the Center either must pay the monthly full-time rate to save their place by continuing their enrollment or complete a new application and submit the  application fee of $50/$100 to be placed on the waitlist for a future opening.

Priority of Enrollment

Priority is given to children enrolled full-time.

Initial Opening Placement:

  • Children of full-time (greater than 75% time) faculty and staff, and full-time students determined by the date your application and fee were received
  • Children of part-time (less than 75% time) faculty and staff, and part-time students determined by the date your application and fee were received.

Priority Placement Guidelines:

  • Children already enrolled in Center. Children who are developmentally ready to transition to the next age group will be moved into vacancies as they become available.
  • Siblings of children already enrolled at the Center. This allows families to be together in the same center.
  • Children of full-time (greater than 75% time) faculty and staff, and full-time students determined by the date your application and fee were received.
  • Children of part-time (less than 75% time) faculty and staff, and part-time students determined by the date your application and fee were received.

Acceptance Process

Initial acceptances are made on the basis of confirmation of the information on the application. When your child’s application is selected for enrollment from the waitlist, the Center’s director will notify you of your eligibility to enroll and provide you with an enrollment packet.  Once you are notified of a vacancy by either email or phone, you must respond with your intent to enroll within 5 working days if you would like to enroll your child.  Failure to respond within the time period will be treated as a declination to the offer and you will no longer be on the waitlist or your deposit will be forfeited.  It is your responsibility to keep the Center informed of your current email address or phone number and also to inform the Center of any vacation, sabbatical, sick leave or any time that you are scheduled away from your phone and/or email address.  As a final step you must make an appointment with the Center’s director to complete the enrollment process.

Updates

The waitlist is updated yearly. Updated information and materials are mailed to the address listed on the application.  To remain on the waitlist the updated application must be mailed back by the deadline indicated on the mailing.

Absence Priority

Absence less than one (1) month – Payment of the monthly rate is due to save the spot.

Unless the full monthly rate is paid each month – the following applies:

Absence one (1) month but less that three (3) months - The child’s name will be placed at the top of the waiting list when the $50/$100 application fee is paid and will have priority second only to siblings where families are already enrolled. If the absence from the Center is University related business (sabbatical, University sponsored travel) the application fee is waived.  Placement at the top of the waiting list does not guarantee a spot. Vacancies will be filled.

Summer Break   - If a parent removes their child from the Center over the summer, then that child will be at the top of the waiting list when the $50/$100 application fee is paid. Placement at the top of the waiting list does not guarantee a spot.  When a vacancy occurs it will be filled

Semester Only - If a family takes a child out for a semester the child’s name will be placed at the top of the waiting list when the $50/$100 application fee is paid for one semester and will have priority second only to siblings in families already enrolled.  If the absence from the Center is University related business (sabbatical, University sponsored travel) the application fee is waived. Placement at the top of the waiting list does not guarantee a spot.  Vacancies will be filled

Longer than one (1) Semester – No spot will be held.  The family must complete a new application and pay the fee for the child to be placed on the waiting list. If the absence from the Center is University-related business (sabbatical, University sponsored travel) the application fee is waived.

Contract Periods and Minimum Usage

Contract periods are oriented around the academic calendar (semester).  Each semester parents request the schedule of care needed for that semester (full or part time).

All children enrolled in the Center are expected to attend continuously through the year.  If a child is withdrawn from the Center for any reason, placement back into the Center cannot be guaranteed unless full payment is maintained throughout the leave.

Changes or Termination

Changes in enrollment or termination of enrollment require a 30 day  written notice to the Center’s director.    Parents or legal guardians are responsible for all contracted tuition fees within the 30 day period.  Schedule changes are based on availability.  The Center will accommodate a schedule change that is in the best interest of the Center.  If the change leaves an open spot, a 30 day written notice is required.

Parents or legal guardians that are no longer employed at the University will be able to keep their child enrolled in the Center for three (3) months at the Michigan Tech rate but after the three (3) months will be assessed the community tuition rate and enrollment priority status becomes “community” subject to semi-annual enrollment review.

Extra Time Requests

Parent enrolling their child for part-time attendance may occasionally find the need for extra care.  Additional time or days are based on availability and at the discretion of the Center’s director.  The fee for the extra time is based on the half-day fee.

Program Material Fee

At the beginning of each fiscal year each child enrolled in the center will be assessed a program material fee of $50.  This fee will be deducted from the $100 waitlist fee the first year of enrollment. For the University student, this program material fee is waived from the first time enrollment fee of $50.

Late Pick-up

Parent must notify the Center if they are going to be late to pick up their child.

Children picked up less than 15 minutes late (after 12:30 pm - morning schedule) or less than 15 minutes late (5:30 pm - full-day or afternoon schedule) will be assessed a $10 fee per child.  The first occurrence of late pick-up will be excused.

After 15 minutes past the program ending time, parents will be assessed an additional $5 fee per child for every 5 minutes they are late.  If the child or children are not picked up in 30 minutes, the Director can request the help of the Michigan Tech Public Safety office to find the whereabouts of the parents.

Parents who are late picking up their child(ren) three times in one year may lose their spot(s) in the Center.
