Biography

Kurt Paterson has been on the environmental engineering faculty at Michigan Technological University since 1993. He currently serves as Director of Michigan Tech’s D80 Center (www.d80.mtu.edu), a consortium of 20 research, education, and service programs dedicated to creating sustainable development solutions with the poorest 80% of humanity. Within the D80 Center he is Director or Co-Director of five international programs, including the Peace Corps Master’s International program in civil and environmental engineering. His research, teaching and service interests focus on appropriate technology solutions that improve public health, international project-based service learning, and engineering education reform. He is currently leading an international effort to measure the impacts of programs like EWB on engineering education. He is co-author of two books to be released in Summer 2009: Engineering in Developing Communities, and Environmental Engineering: Fundamentals, Sustainability, and Design. He is currently providing leadership to several international initiatives at the American Society for Engineering Education, and numerous educational activities at Engineers Without Borders-USA. He is also CEO of the non-profit organization, Kid’sView (www.kidsview.org), which shares the lives of children around the world, as captured by their photographs. His dog is adopted from the streets of Nicaragua.
