Research Profile—Pat Martin

The Diggingest Prof Pat Martin

Pat Martin really digs summer. That's when the Michigan Tech industrial archaeology professor can roll up his sleeves, put on his steel-toed boots and get out his shovel.

Martin has had the opportunity to do archaeology research, or "digs" as they are known, looking for the remnants of copper mines in Copper Harbor and foundry foundations in Cold Springs, New York. He once collected artifacts from a long-unused two-story outhouse in the UP and from a mountainside mining operation in Alaska.

This guy gets around. And he takes his students with him.

Each of Martin's projects includes opportunities for students—from undergraduates to master's to PhD candidates—to dig along with him. He focuses on our industrial heritage and leads Michigan Tech's distinctive program in industrial archaeology.

If you are interested in a place where the faculty and students get their hands dirty—together—join Pat Martin and the rest of the Michigan Tech faculty. Create your future—even while studying your past.
