1928–2013

Major General Manila G. Shaver was drafted into the army in 1950, volunteered for the airborne and was assigned to the 675th Field Artillery Battalion, 11th Airborne Division. He left the service in 1953 as a Sergeant and resumed his college career. He graduated from Michigan Tech in 1955 and was commissioned in the Field Artillery. After leaving active service, he stayed in the Army Reserves. His last assignment was Commanding General, 88th US Army Reserve Command, Fort Snelling, Minnesota responsible for a three state area.

From 1956 to 1990 Maj. Gen. Shaver held positions with Kimberly Clark, Spencer Kellogg & Sons and 3M concurrent with his US Army Reserve career. In 1990 he retired as Major General with the US Army and from 3M as Manager, Resource Recovery, Staff Manufacturing. During his years at Michigan Tech, Maj. Gen. Shaver was affiliated with Intramural Sports, Sigma Rho, American Institute of Chemical Engineers and ROTC/Army – Distinguished Military Student. In 1974 he received the General John J. Pershing Award as the Distinguished Graduate of the US Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Maj.

General Shaver is a member and past president of the Retired Officers Association of the Sandhills area. He is President of Sandhills/Moore Coalition for Human Care, Inc. and Manager of the Empty Stocking Christmas Program for Moore County. Maj. Gen. Shaver has four daughters and a son and currently resides with his wife Dolores in North Carolina.
