Gary E. Anderson retired from the Dow Corning Corporation in 2006 after being the chairman and chief executive officer since 2001.
Anderson graduated from Michigan Tech in 1967 with a BS in Chemical Engineering. He also studied at Central Michigan University, where he earned a master's degree in business administration. Except for a one-year appointment as the Assistant Secretary of International Trade in the US Department of Commerce under Ronald Reagan's presidency in the mid-1980s, Anderson has worked for Dow Corning for his entire career.
After a wide range of assignments in manufacturing, process engineering and financial management, he became president of the company in 1994, chief executive officer in 1999 and chairman of the board in 2001.
His involvement with Michigan Tech is extensive. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Michigan Tech Fund and served as president, while he was the vice chair for the University's Leaders for Innovation capital campaign, which raised over $140 million. He was instrumental in securing funding for the Dow Environmental Sciences and Engineering Building.
Anderson served on President Curt Tompkins' National Advisory Board, is a member of the Chemical Engineering Academy and belongs to MTU's 1885 Society. He was awarded the Board of Control Silver Medal in 1993, the Outstanding Service Award in 2000, and the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2005.
In addition, Anderson has been active in both professional and community service. He was a member of the Conference Board, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, the American Chemistry Council and director of the Chemical Industry Institute of Toxicology.
He also serves on the board of directors of the Eastman Chemical Company and Chemical Financial Corporation.
A native of the UP along with his wife Judy, they still enjoy outdoor family activities such as skiing, swimming, hunting and fishing with their children and grandchildren.
