JUST GO WITH IT (PG-13 for plenty of vulgarity, some profanity & innuendo, partial nudity): Nearly two hours of another Adam Sandler film playing the usual Adam Sandler role for nearly two hours; it's nearly two hours too much, with this dismal updating of the 1969 hit, "Cactus Flower," with Walter Matthau, Ingrid Bergman, & Goldie Hawn (who won an Oscar for her role) - the film being a screen adaptation of a most successful Broadway play (also derived from "Fleur de Ccactus," a French farce).
As with "Mechanic," this updated version updates, with Sandler there for Sandler admirers - if there are any left by this time. He plays Danny Maccabee, an L.A. plastic surgeon who keeps women at bay by pretending he's married. But when Ms. Right, comes along, what's he to do but find someone (Jennifer Aniston) to pose as his soon-to-be divorced wife, and then things get complicated; they take a trip to Hawaii, with Danny's cousin (Nick Swardson) posing as a new boyfriend; introduce an old college rival (Nicole Kidman) to the fun, and the lies keep piling up.
It's absurd, artificial stuff - perfect as farce - but as played by Sandler in particular (trying to shape it into his usual routine) it's a bust. Director Dennis Dugan, who has worked in the past with Sandler, treats the whole thing in that laid-back, Hollywood-style. Result: a total misfire. (Grade: D+)
