(PG for mild crude humor, sequences of comic violence): A nice fellow (Jackie Chan) in a suburban residence eagerly accepts the responsibility to care for his girlfriend's 3 brats while she's away. Complication: he's also a spy in a home full of spy gadgets, which the kids immediately discover. Despite an innate dislike of him, the kids are won over, no thanks to bumbling counter spies' interference. Just as things are going fine, girlfriend returns, discovers what's been going on, and decides she now hates the fellow. But since this is supposed to be a comedy, it ends on an embarrassingly long series of out-takes that fail dismally to bring the happy ending to a satisfying conclusion.
The movie fails on every level. The script is thrown together from dozens of earlier spy comedies or has been written by a chimp with a typewriter. Chan obviously is aging; his stunts are either sad duplicates of what he used to do with ease in earlier times or, if they are more spectacular, performed by stunt man David Quan as his double. The kids are stereotypes. There is no chemistry between Chan & the statuesque model as his girlfriend. Jokes are stale (little kid, sheepishly tries with fake sexy bravado, saying to a woman, "If I told you that you had a beautiful body, would you hold it against me?" Yuk yuk.)
Roles are played by the numbers; nothing reads with any semblance of believability, even as a farce - which it's not.
Worst of all, as with Arnold Schwarzeneger in his kindergarden flop, it's pathetic to watch this man who once thrilled us with clever plots and daring feats, has gradually slipped to this level. One feels he deserves A for effort, but not for results. It's embarrassing to witness. (Grade: F)
